Spain win easily in Albania. Italy’s Ciro Immobile is a last-minute stumbling block against Macedonia, and Iceland is a success against Turkey. A look at the matches of the World Cup qualification.
Albania – Spain 0: 2 (0: 0)
Spain are still looking ahead to the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia. In his third qualifying match, the 2010 world champion prevailed against Albania. Although the outsider continued for a long time, in the second half Albania had the look. Diego Costa put Spain ahead in the 55th minute. Nolito (63 minutes) made the decision. With seven points the Spanish selection table leader of group G.
Macedonia – Italy 2: 3 (0: 1)
In the parallel game of group G, Italy had a long hard time and in the meantime threatened a defeat against Macedonia. Only in the second minute of the stoppage time Ciro Immobile met the 3: 2-winner. The former Dortmunder had the Italians already in the 75th Minute the 2: 2-compensation. Prior to that, Macedonia had taken the lead from Ilija Nestorovski (57 ‘) and Ferhan Hasani (59’) after Andrea Belotti had scored the first goal for Italy (24). Thanks to the late success, Italy are still second-placed with Spain, but by the worse goal ratio second.
Iceland – Turkey 2: 0 (2: 0)
The surprise of the European Championship continues to be strong. In Group I, Iceland won 2-0 against Turkey. With an own goal of Bundesliga professional Ömer Toprak (Bayer Leverkusen) in the 42nd minute, the EC quarterfinals went into the lead. Augsburg’s Alfred Finnbogason made the 2: 0 (44th) just before the side change, it was the decision. With seven points Iceland is second, Turkey has only two points and is fourth.
Finland – Croatia 0: 1 (0: 1)
Croatia had previously defended their top position in Group I thanks to a much better goal against Iceland. The team around Mario Mandzukic beat Finland 1: 0 in his third qualifying match. The former Bayern striker scored the winning goal in the 18th minute.
Ukraine – Kosovo 3: 0 (1: 0)
In the third game of Group I, Ukraine won a clear victory against the selection of Kosovo. Ex-Stuttgarter Artem Krawez (31), Andrij Jarmolenko (81st) and Ruslan Rotan (87th) met. Ukraine have so far collected five points from three games, Kosovo is with a point last. The match was not held in the actual host country Ukraine, but in Krakow (Poland). The Ukrainian government does not recognize Kosovo as an independent state.
Wales – Georgia 1: 1 (1: 0)
European semi-finalist Wales has problems in qualifying. Against outsider Georgia the team around superstar Gareth Bale had to content themselves with a 1: 1 and suffered three days after the 2-2 in Austria the next point losses.
Despite the early goal of Real-Madrid’s professional Bale (10th), Wales gained little control over the game. Tornike Okriashvili (57) added the first home goal in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in a qualifying match after 481 minutes.
Serbia – Austria 3: 2 (2: 1)
In Belgrade the Austrian record series of eight away games in series with a 2: 3 against Serbia. For Serbia, Newcastle professional Alexander Mitrovic scored twice (6/23), the winner marked Dusan Tadic in the 74th minute. The Austrians had equaled twice by Marcel Sabitzer of the Federal League RB Leipzig (15th) and Marc Janko (62nd). The Serbs took the lead in the group D, with seven points in front of the equalizer Iren, who won 3-1 (1: 1) in Moldova.
Israel – Liechtenstein 2: 1 (2: 0)
In Group G, Israel secured their second victory in the current round. Thanks to an early double pack by Tomer Hemed (4th / 16th), the selection was already at an early stage. Maximilian Göppel’s (49th) defeat could not prevent the third defeat of Liechtenstein.
